Two civilians were killed and eight others were injured when the military junta forces fired artillery shells at Nagadwin village in Monywa Township, Sagaing Region. The incident occurred on the evening of May 22, when the military fired artillery shells without any ongoing battles in the area. The deceased were identified as Ma San Po and Ko Sit Hshwin, who died instantly when an artillery shell hit their house.
The artillery strikes occurred while a celebration was being held at the Northwestern Military Command headquarters (NaMaKha) in Monywa. The military fired artillery shells indiscriminately around the city from 4 PM until after 9 PM. The shelling came from military outposts and checkpoints located in and around Monywa city, resulting in shells landing and exploding in Nagadwin village. Among the injured was an 83-year-old elderly man who sustained severe injuries, according to local residents.
This unprovoked artillery attack on civilian areas represents a brutal act by the military, resulting in the tragic deaths of innocent civilians. The military deliberately targeted civilian areas even while conducting celebrations, which constitutes a violation of international humanitarian law. The incident demonstrates the ongoing pattern of violence against civilians by the military forces, who continue to launch indiscriminate attacks on residential areas without any military targets or justification.
