Military sources from the Thai-Myanmar border have confirmed that revolutionary allied forces have begun launching offensive operations against the military council camp in Mawkhi, located along the Thai-Myanmar border in Myawaddy Township, Karen State. The offensive began at 7 AM on May 21, when allied forces under the leadership of General Nerdah Mya of the Karen National Defense Organization-KTLA initiated attacks on the military council’s Mawkhi camp in the Wawlay area south of Myawaddy. Intense fighting has been reported, with drone strikes being conducted and heavy artillery fire observed from the Wawlay strategic base.
Due to the ongoing conflict, the Myawaddy-Wawlay road section within KNU Brigade 6 territory has been temporarily closed by allied forces, and KNLA columns have been put on high alert up to the Three Pagodas Pass and Phlu village areas. The military council maintains several bases in the region, with the Wawlay strategic base and Kanelay camp located in the upper Wawlay area, while Ukayittha, Wamitha, and Thaybawboe camps remain in the lower Wawlay area. The fighting has prompted Thai border guard forces to maintain heightened security measures, particularly around the border towns of Phop Phra and Umphang.
Currently, Thai border patrol forces are conducting vigilant surveillance operations due to the intense fighting near the Myanmar side of Phop Phra and Umphang towns along the Thai-Myanmar border. Special attention is being paid to prevent stray bullets from crossing into Thai territory and to monitor any potential airspace violations. The ongoing conflict has significantly impacted the daily movements of local residents, and security concerns have led to temporary suspensions of trade routes in the area. Local sources report that the Thai military remains on high alert to ensure the conflict does not spill over into Thai territory, while simultaneously monitoring the humanitarian situation for civilians affected by the fighting.
