A building previously damaged by an earthquake in Mandalay’s Maharaungmye Township has suffered further collapse following heavy rainfall, prompting the evacuation of nearby residents to safety, according to an official from the Manisala Social Welfare Organization. The incident occurred around 2 AM on May 21, when heavy rain struck the already compromised structure located on 89th Street between 36th and 37th Streets in the Pae Puttaw Quarter of Maharaungmye Township.
The emergency response team quickly evacuated residents from neighboring houses and helped them salvage their belongings. The building is currently leaning precariously, held back only by three electrical cables that have prevented it from completely collapsing onto nearby homes. According to rescue workers at the scene, these power lines are currently the only thing preventing a catastrophic collapse that could severely damage adjacent buildings. The structure remains in this dangerous position, supported only by these three electrical cables while maintaining its pronounced tilt.
This incident follows a tragic event on May 17 in the same township, where a father and son lost their lives when a coconut tree fell at the Shweku Monastery earthquake relief camp during a combination of seismic activity and heavy rainfall. Local authorities and social welfare organizations continue to monitor the situation closely to prevent further loss of life and property damage from these natural disasters. The recent series of events has highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by residents in areas affected by earthquake damage and severe weather conditions.
