
The Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH) announced on May 16, 2023, that Professor Dr. Kyaw Maung Lwin, former Rector of Mandalay Medical University and neurosurgeon, has been appointed as Deputy Minister of Health in the National Unity Government (NUG). This appointment was made in accordance with the Federal Democracy Charter.
Professor Dr. Kyaw Maung Lwin graduated from University of Medicine 1, Yangon in 1987 with an M.B.B.S degree. He obtained his Master of Medical Science degree in 1997 and successfully passed the F.R.C.S examination administered by the Royal College of Edinburgh in 2000. He then served as a specialist at Mandalay General Hospital. In 2005, he earned his Dr.Med.Sc degree, and in 2015, he was appointed as the Rector of Mandalay Medical University.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, he actively participated in disease prevention and control efforts in the Mandalay Region and served as the chief physician at the Ayeyarwady Foundation’s COVID-19 treatment center. Following the military coup in 2021, he led Mandalay Medical University to declare itself as a Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM) institution on February 8, supporting the civilian government.
On February 11, when military council forces attempted to arrest him by breaking into his residence, he managed to escape with the help of his family members and colleagues from the medical university. Since then, he has been in liberated territory, participating in revolutionary activities until his recent appointment as Deputy Minister of Health in the National Unity Government. Throughout his career, he has demonstrated unwavering commitment to public health service and democracy, making him a respected figure in both medical and political spheres.
