The National Unity Government (NUG) has announced that it will take action against military leaders, those who gave orders, those who carried out operations, and lobbyists who cover up the truth regarding the airstrike on a school in Ohteinpin village, Depayin Township, Sagaing Region, and other war crimes. The terrorist military group’s air force bombed the school on the morning of May 12 under direct orders from the military leadership, resulting in the immediate death of 22 students and 2 teachers, while over 100 others were severely injured. The school was a high school operating under the supervision of the NUG’s Ministry of Education.
Due to attacks by military council forces, schools under NUG administration cannot maintain regular school hours and schedules, instead operating based on the security situation. At the time of the airstrike, supplementary classes were being conducted for students who had fallen behind in their studies due to displacement. The NUG has stated that between January 2023 and May 2025, the terrorist military group conducted 2,679 airstrikes across 13 states and regions, excluding Yangon and Naypyidaw, resulting in 3,043 civilian deaths. These attacks have destroyed 240 schools, 96 hospitals and clinics, and 435 religious buildings. Despite announcing ceasefires, the military continues to carry out daily airstrikes, heavy weapons attacks, and mass killings.
The military council attempts to deny these war crimes through state-owned media outlets like MRTV and MWD, while also using paid military lobbyists to spread false news and distorted information. The NUG has stated it will pursue justice through international courts, national courts of other countries, and domestic legal mechanisms to hold accountable all those responsible for war crimes, including military leaders, commanding officers, pilots, military personnel, supporters, and lobbyists who cover up the truth. The NUG has also called on the international community, including the United Nations, to recognize the military’s war crimes and propaganda, and to take concrete action to stop these atrocities.
The NUG has declared it will use all available means to stop the military’s airstrikes and minimize civilian casualties and damage to property. Similar attacks have occurred in multiple locations, including villages in Rakhine State, Sagaing Region, Shan State, Mandalay Region, and Bago Region, resulting in numerous civilian casualties including children and mothers. The military continues these attacks despite claiming to observe ceasefires, demonstrating a pattern of systematic violence against civilians while attempting to hide their actions through state media and paid lobbyists.
