Chinese President Xi Jinping has made direct demands to military council leader Min Aung Hlaing regarding the security of Chinese economic interests and personnel in Myanmar. During their meeting on May 9, the Chinese President emphasized the need for practical guarantees for the safety of Chinese staff, organizations, and projects in Myanmar. According to China’s Xinhua News Agency, Xi also demanded effective action against cross-border crimes, including online gambling and telecommunications fraud occurring in border regions.
Military council leader Min Aung Hlaing responded by stating that he places great importance on relations with China and assured that Myanmar would continue to be China’s trusted friend. He promised to enhance bilateral cooperation in economics, trade, and energy sectors while guaranteeing full security for Chinese projects and personnel in Myanmar. This meeting took place during Min Aung Hlaing’s attendance at the 80th Victory Day celebrations in Moscow, Russia. Military sources in Naypyidaw confirmed that the meeting was arranged with Russian assistance to secure an audience with the Chinese President.
This significant diplomatic engagement focused on protecting Chinese economic interests in Myanmar and addressing ongoing issues in border regions. The meeting highlights the complex relationship between Myanmar’s military council and China, particularly regarding security concerns and economic cooperation. The Chinese President’s direct demands for security guarantees reflect growing concerns about the safety of Chinese investments and personnel in Myanmar, while the military council’s promises of protection demonstrate its dependence on maintaining positive relations with China amid ongoing internal conflicts and international isolation.
