
Chinese President Xi Jinping and military council leader Min Aung Hlaing met in Moscow to discuss the security of Chinese business interests and personnel in Myanmar. During the meeting, the Chinese President directly requested practical guarantees for the safety and security of Chinese staff, organizations, and projects in Myanmar. Additionally, there was significant emphasis on effectively combating cross-border crimes, including online gambling and telecommunications fraud occurring in border regions.
Min Aung Hlaing responded by expressing the high importance he places on relations with China, stating that Myanmar would continue to position itself as China’s trusted partner. He promised to enhance cooperation in economic, trade, and energy sectors while guaranteeing complete security for Chinese projects and personnel. The meeting took place during Min Aung Hlaing’s attendance at the 80th anniversary celebration of World War II victory in Moscow, Russia. According to military sources in Naypyidaw, this meeting was facilitated through Russian intermediation. China’s state-run Xinhua News Agency also released a report about this meeting.
The discussion highlighted the growing concerns about security issues affecting Chinese investments and personnel in Myanmar, particularly in the context of ongoing regional instability. The military council leader’s assurances come at a time when China seeks stronger guarantees for its economic interests in Myanmar, including various infrastructure and development projects. The meeting also addressed the need for increased cooperation in combating transnational crimes along the Myanmar-China border, reflecting China’s concerns about illegal activities affecting both countries’ interests.
