
Military council forces conducted artillery strikes and aerial attacks on villages in Nyaunglebin District of Bago Region and Naung Cho Township in Shan State, resulting in the deaths of 6 civilians including a 5-year-old child. According to statements from the Karen National Union (KNU) and Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), these attacks occurred between May 5 and May 8. The military council’s attacks have continued despite their announcement of extending a ceasefire period from May 6 to May 31, 2025.
In Bago Region, on May 5, troops from Infantry Battalion 350 based in Thura Thamin village in Shwegyin Township launched drone artillery strikes on the Thitayar Buddhist monastery in Kwin Seik village, damaging a nearby house belonging to U Phoe Pyar. On May 7, military forces conducted an airstrike on Khaung Inn village in Mone Township, killing Daw Yi Myint, age 57, and U Hla Myint, age 67, from artillery shrapnel wounds. Two children – 12-year-old Ma Poe Di and 3-year-old Maung Ngwe Paw – were also injured in the attack. Additionally, military forces from Kun Chaung Wa fired howitzer artillery at Htuni Kon village, wounding Saw Kaw La Thu with shrapnel.
In Shan State’s Naung Cho Township, Artillery Battalion 902 of the military council fired artillery shells at Thayet Cho village during a wedding ceremony around 6 PM on May 8. The attack killed four people instantly, including 5-year-old Ma Win Thazin Phyu, two 40-year-old men, and a 40-year-old woman. Seven others – one child and six adults – sustained severe injuries from the artillery shell fragments. The TNLA reported that the military council has continued launching offensives, artillery strikes, and drone attacks in Ta’ang territory despite declaring a ceasefire extension. The organization has urged civilians to remain vigilant against military attacks and follow air raid protection protocols for their safety.
