A People’s Militia Force (PMF) member under the Pa-O National Organization (PNO) has defected to the Pa-O National Liberation Army (PNLA) with weapons, citing unbearable abuse from military forces and PNO senior officials in Sisaing Township, Southern Shan State. According to a spokesperson from PNLA’s Information Department, the defection occurred on April 16, with the soldier bringing an M-32 rifle, two ammunition magazines, and approximately 100 rounds of ammunition.
The defecting militia member revealed that military troops and PNO senior officials had subjected him to physical abuse, beating him with sticks. He also witnessed them looting and confiscating properties from villagers, which ultimately led to his decision to flee. Currently, he is receiving medical treatment from the PNLO/PNLA medical unit for injuries sustained from the abuse. The PNLA has provided financial support to the defector and ensured his safe relocation to a secure location.
The PNLA Information Department spokesperson emphasized that Pa-O nationals are not enemies of each other, stating that the military dictatorship system is the true enemy of all people across the country. They have urged all Pa-O people to recognize and accept this truth. The defector’s testimony has shed light on the systematic abuse and exploitation carried out by both military forces and PNO officials, including the beating of subordinates and the looting of civilian properties in village areas. This incident highlights the growing dissatisfaction within the ranks of military-affiliated organizations and the continuing struggle against military rule in Myanmar.
