The National Unity Government (NUG) has officially confirmed that Dr. Zaw Wai Soe, Minister of Health and Education, has returned to Myanmar from abroad and will permanently settle in the country to carry out healthcare and education-related work for the public. When contacted for comment, Dr. Zaw Wai Soe confirmed his return to Myanmar and stated that he has no plans to leave the country again. This marks a significant development in the NUG’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its presence within Myanmar.
Since his return to Myanmar, Dr. Zaw Wai Soe has been working alongside Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM) healthcare workers, civilian medical staff, and volunteer health workers who are participating in the non-violent resistance movement. Together, they are providing healthcare services to both revolutionary forces and the general public. According to a senior NUG official, the Ministry of Health is not only focusing on civilian medical care but is also collaborating with the Ministry of Defense to provide medical treatment for People’s Defense Force (PDF) members who have been injured in conflicts. This comprehensive healthcare approach demonstrates the NUG’s commitment to supporting both civilian and resistance needs.
Dr. Zaw Wai Soe’s return comes in response to Acting President Duwa Lashi La’s January 1st call for NUG ministers and officials abroad to return to Myanmar. He becomes the first NUG minister to permanently return to the country following this appeal. During his time abroad, Dr. Zaw Wai Soe participated in international health and education conferences as a minister, where he explained the NUG’s policies and helped raise international awareness about the Myanmar people’s Spring Revolution. His work included presenting the challenges faced by Myanmar’s healthcare and education sectors under the current circumstances, while also advocating for international support for the democratic movement in Myanmar.
