A Revolutionary Thingyan Festival held in two cities in the United Kingdom has successfully raised over $100,000 (approximately 400 million Myanmar Kyat), according to Dr. Thet Ko Ko, one of the event organizers. The fundraising events, which took place in London and Manchester, were primarily organized to support victims of the recent earthquake in Myanmar and to commemorate those who sacrificed their lives during the ongoing revolution.
The festival featured sales of traditional Myanmar food, handicrafts, and revolution-themed merchandise. The events also included interfaith prayer sessions and a minute of silence to honor both earthquake victims and fallen revolutionaries. The festivals attracted not only Myanmar communities in the UK but also local residents who showed their support for Myanmar’s cause. The events demonstrated strong solidarity among the Myanmar diaspora community and their continued commitment to supporting their homeland during challenging times.
The funds raised from these events will be donated to the National Unity Government’s (NUG) Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management. These funds will be utilized for emergency relief operations and rehabilitation efforts for earthquake victims. Additionally, some portions of the funds will be allocated to support internally displaced persons affected by the ongoing conflict in Myanmar. The successful fundraising demonstrates the Myanmar diaspora’s continued dedication to supporting their fellow citizens facing both natural disasters and political upheaval in their homeland.
