The United Nations Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar (IIMM) has reported an escalation in airstrikes by the Myanmar military council. Two years ago, an airstrike on Pazi Gyi village in Sagaing Region resulted in the deaths of at least 155 civilians, including children. This incident marks the deadliest attack since the military seized power in February 2021. The IIMM notes that aerial bombardments, including the use of drones and alleged chemical weapons, have become a terrifying aspect of the conflict in Myanmar, with increased frequency following the Pazi Gyi attack.
Even during rescue operations in earthquake-affected areas in March, the military continued conducting airstrikes in Mandalay, Sagaing, and other regions. The systematic escalation of airstrikes by the Myanmar military across the country has resulted in widespread casualties, destruction, and displacement, terrorizing communities. The attacks have deliberately targeted civilian locations including schools, hospitals, refugee camps, religious buildings, and public gatherings. Nicholas Koumjian, head of the Myanmar Investigative Mechanism, stated that these attacks are not collateral damage but appear to be targeted operations against civilians.
The Karenni National Progressive Party has strongly condemned the military’s bombing of Thekwet village in Pekon Township during the 25th Karenni National Day celebrations. The attack occurred at 11:45 PM on April 10, using 200-pound bombs. This attack during the declared ceasefire period due to earthquake relief efforts constitutes a war crime and violates international standards regarding ethnic minority rights. The military’s actions breach both the 1994 ceasefire agreement and their own nationwide ceasefire declaration.
The attack occurred within the KNPP’s central administrative area, directly violating the 1994 ceasefire agreements. The KNPP has issued a warning stating they will not be responsible for any consequences if such attacks continue against civilian areas and national cultural activities in demilitarized zones. The party emphasized that these attacks not only violate military agreements but also represent a direct assault on ethnic minority rights and cultural preservation efforts.
