Two more aftershocks were recorded near Mandalay city on April 9, causing alarm among local residents. The tremors occurred at 9:10 PM and 10:29 PM, with both being distinctly felt throughout Mandalay city. According to local residents, the second tremor at 10:29 PM was particularly noticeable, prompting many to evacuate their buildings in fear. One local resident reported that even though the magnitude wasn’t severe, people have become increasingly sensitive to any seismic activity, causing them to panic at the slightest tremor.
According to the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology, the first aftershock at 9:10 PM was centered approximately 7 miles northwest of Mandalay city, measuring 3.1 on the Richter scale. The second tremor at 10:29 PM was centered about 5 miles northwest of the city with a magnitude of 3.6. These were part of a total of five aftershocks recorded on April 9 alone, highlighting the continued seismic activity in the region. The frequency of these aftershocks has become a source of growing concern for local residents, particularly during nighttime occurrences when people are more vulnerable and less prepared to respond.
These recent tremors are part of a series of aftershocks following the major earthquake that struck on March 28, which measured 7.7 on the Richter scale. Official reports indicate that there have been 112 recorded aftershocks since the main earthquake, demonstrating the ongoing seismic activity in the region. The continuous nature of these aftershocks has led to increased anxiety among the local population, with many residents reporting heightened stress levels and sleep disruption. The situation has particularly affected those living in multi-story buildings, with some choosing to temporarily relocate to ground-level areas or open spaces during nighttime hours as a precautionary measure.
