A representative from the Unicorn Guerrilla Force has confirmed that nearly 40 people have died following the powerful earthquake that struck the Mingun area of Sagaing Township, Sagaing Region on March 28. Monks and revolutionary forces are working together to conduct rescue operations. The earthquake, which occurred at 12:52 PM, caused the collapse of ancient pagodas, residential buildings, and houses. People’s Defense Force members are transporting the injured to hospitals and clinics for medical treatment.
The death toll, which includes casualties from both military council-controlled territories and areas under revolutionary forces’ control, stands at nearly 40 and is expected to rise. While monks and nuns are among the deceased, exact numbers are not yet available. Rescue operations are ongoing, though there are difficulties conducting rescue work in military council-controlled areas. Some monks and concerned citizens are leading rescue efforts in accessible areas.
In the Mingun area, the earthquake has destroyed monasteries and drinking water wells, leaving local residents in urgent need of emergency food supplies, medicine, drinking water, and temporary shelter. A spokesperson from the Unicorn Guerrilla Force stated that temporary shelters need to be constructed before the approaching rainy season, and new wells must be dug for drinking water. As a result, they are appealing to people both inside and outside the country to provide assistance to earthquake-affected residents in whatever way they can.
