
According to the Inle Lake Public Movement Group, at least 36 people have died in villages around the Inle Lake area of Nyaungshwe Township, Southern Shan State, following an earthquake that struck on March 28. The earthquake, which originated near Sagaing city, severely impacted villages in the Inle Lake region, with the highest casualties reported in Hae Ya Village, Thalae Oo Inn, Nanpan, and Kela villages.
The timing of the earthquake coincided with the electricity supply period, resulting in some deaths from electrocution, while others perished due to collapsing buildings and structures. Initial casualty figures indicate 25 deaths from Nanpan village and 5 from Ywa Ma village, among the total of 36 confirmed deaths. The injured and deceased have been transported to Nanpan Hospital, as confirmed by the Inle Lake Public Movement Group.
According to local residents, the earthquake caused widespread panic throughout the Inle Lake region, resulting in building collapses, road damage, and fallen power lines. Additionally, aftershocks continue to occur following the main earthquake, causing ongoing concern and fear among local residents. The situation remains tense as communities cope with the aftermath of the disaster and authorities work to assess the full extent of the damage and casualties in the affected areas.
