On March 28, an earthquake that struck Naypyidaw region in the afternoon caused the collapse of the air traffic control tower at Naypyidaw International Airport, resulting in the death of all staff members who were on duty at the time. According to a military source in Naypyidaw, the control tower collapsed due to the strong earthquake, and all personnel working in the tower were trapped and killed in the collapse.
The earthquake caused extensive damage throughout the capital city of Naypyidaw, with numerous buildings, roads, and infrastructure suffering significant destruction. Roads developed cracks, and landslides occurred in some areas. While there have been reported casualties across the Naypyidaw region, the exact number of fatalities remains unclear, as authorities are facing difficulties in collecting accurate data due to the current circumstances.
The access roads to Naypyidaw Airport have also been damaged by the earthquake, creating obstacles for emergency response operations. Investigation of the damage within the airport area is ongoing, and air traffic operations have been temporarily suspended due to the collapse of the control tower. Rescue teams are currently conducting damage assessments and carrying out search and rescue operations to locate and assist injured individuals and recover those who have lost their lives in the disaster.
