Two Myanmar workers died from electrocution while cleaning drainage near Soi 37 on Phetkasem Road in Bang Sue district, Bangkok, Thailand. The incident occurred around 11:50 PM on March 24, claiming the lives of Ko Linn Naing, aged 35, and Ko Min Lwin Win, aged 30. The information was confirmed by U Hla Khaing, Director of the AAC Alliance Group, which provides assistance to Myanmar workers in Thailand.
Of the two deceased workers, one had arrived in Thailand through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), while the other had been living and working in Thailand for an extended period. The electrocution occurred in an underground tunnel where oxygen levels were low, highlighting workplace safety deficiencies. According to Thai law, family members or those listed in the same household registration are entitled to compensation of 780,000 Thai Baht in the event of such workplace fatalities.
Currently, arrangements are being made to retrieve the bodies of the deceased workers, and efforts are ongoing to secure compensation for their families. The AAC Alliance Group has stated that if there are delays in compensation payment from the employer, they will pursue legal action in accordance with Thai law. Additionally, regarding a separate incident on March 15 involving the collapse of the Phlaeng Faeng expressway in Bangkok that resulted in the deaths of four Myanmar nationals and two Thai citizens, while compensation has been paid for the Thai victims, the Myanmar victims’ families have yet to receive any compensation. The AAC Alliance Group continues to assist the families of the deceased in their pursuit of rightful compensation.
