On March 23 in Yangon, the Aung Lan Hlyint Shwe Yay Kyee People’s Strike Column held a demonstration calling for action against the military under Article 33 of the International Labour Organization (ILO). The protesters expressed their opposition to the military coup while carrying signs demanding the implementation of ILO Article 33 on Myanmar. The peaceful demonstration highlighted the need for international action against the military council’s violations of labor rights and human rights.
Article 33 of the ILO Constitution allows for effective measures to be taken when a member state fails to comply with ILO recommendations. The protesters emphasized that ILO action is necessary due to the military council’s ongoing forced labor practices, forced military recruitment, and other labor rights violations. The demonstrators also pointed out that since the military coup, civilians have lost their fundamental human rights due to the military council’s violent oppression. The protest specifically called for the implementation of Article 33 measures against Myanmar in 2025, reflecting the urgent need for international intervention to address the military’s systematic violations of worker and human rights.
