The Kalay People’s Strike Leading Committee, along with the Public Education Strike Column, has conducted a public movement in Kalay Township, Sagaing Region, demanding immediate action against the military council under Article 33 of the International Labour Organization (ILO). The movement highlighted demands for the implementation of ILO Article 33 on Myanmar and exposed the military council’s violations of workers’ rights to the international community.
Article 33 of the ILO Constitution provides for effective measures to be taken against a member state that severely violates workers’ rights. The call for action comes as the military council continues to suppress labor unions, arrest labor leaders, and impose forced labor practices. These systematic violations of fundamental worker rights have prompted the public to demand international intervention through the ILO’s strongest enforcement mechanism.
A leader from the Kalay People’s Strike Leading Committee stated that the military council has been systematically violating basic workers’ rights, including the dissolution of labor organizations and the torture of labor leaders. They emphasized the urgent need for effective international action to address these violations. The spokesperson also stressed that the ILO should implement Article 33 as soon as possible to protect the rights of workers in Myanmar, highlighting the deteriorating situation of labor rights under military rule and the importance of international intervention to support Myanmar’s workers in their struggle for basic rights and dignity.
