Two high-ranking officials from the military-affiliated Mon Peace Group (MMFD) were killed in separate shooting incidents in Kawkareik Township, Karen State. Colonel General Naing Aung Chan and Commander Thauk were both fatally shot on March 13, according to local sources. The first incident occurred around 8:30 AM when Colonel General Naing Aung Chan was traveling by car from Paw Kyu Kone village to Kaw Bein village. Unknown assailants attacked his vehicle near the Phaya Gyi Zi Phyu Kone ward area, resulting in his immediate death.
Approximately one hour later, at around 9:30 AM, Commander Thauk was similarly attacked near an old gambling venue in Kaw Don village. Local sources confirmed that both men suffered fatal gunshot wounds to the head and died instantly. The deceased Colonel General Naing Aung Chan, who was based at the Kaw Tun headquarters, had been granted authority to operate drug distribution networks and gambling operations across Mon State’s Kyaikmayaw Township and Karen State’s Hpa-an and Kawkareik Townships.
Furthermore, he was known to be a key figure in coordinating military operations with the junta forces and had frequently ordered artillery strikes on villages suspected of harboring revolutionary forces. He was also notorious for forcibly seizing farmland from local residents. The simultaneous attacks on these military-affiliated Mon Peace Group leaders are being interpreted by local observers as an indication of strengthening revolutionary activities in the region. The incidents highlight the ongoing conflict between resistance forces and military-affiliated groups in the area, where tensions have been escalating due to forced conscription, land seizures, and other oppressive practices against civilians.
