A public movement calling for the implementation of ILO Article 33 was conducted in Yinmabin Township, Sagaing Region, on March 11, led by the Northern No-Return Revolutionary Strike Column. The movement aimed to eliminate forced labor in Myanmar and oppose the military dictatorship. The strike column, together with local residents, held peaceful demonstrations demanding the International Labour Organization (ILO) to take action against Myanmar under Article 33.
The northern region of Yinmabin has been experiencing continuous oppression by the military since the coup. Local residents face various human rights violations, including forced military conscription, arbitrary arrests, property confiscation, and other forms of abuse. This demonstration represents their appeal to the international labor organization to take effective measures against these violations. The strike column is working to ensure that the voices of local people reach the international community.
ILO Article 33 is a provision that allows for effective action to be taken when a member state severely violates workers’ rights. In Myanmar, the military regime has been widely committing forced labor practices, recruiting child soldiers, and imposing mandatory labor requirements, necessitating such international intervention. The public movement in Yinmabin represents a crucial step in bringing attention to these ongoing violations and calling for concrete action from international bodies to address these serious human rights abuses under the military regime’s rule.
