
In Sap Twar Taw village of Hmawbi Township, Yangon Region, the military council forces arrested Maung Pyae Phyo Hlaing, a married man who had undergone eye surgery, from his home for forced military service. The arrest took place on March 9 at 8:30 PM, led by village hundred-households head San Lwin and soldiers. At the time of arrest, his wife and 3-year-old son were left behind at their home, according to relatives.
Maung Pyae Phyo Hlaing was told he would have to attend the 11th military training batch as a new recruit. Despite being a patient who had undergone eye surgery, he was forcibly taken by military council forces. Similarly, in Gway Kone West village of Nyaung Ram town in Thazi Township, Meiktila District, Mandalay Region, the military council-appointed village chairman Kyaw Moe and his team, in collaboration with police from Nyaung Ram police station, have been arresting and extorting money from civilians and youth under the pretext of the Military Service Law.
In Thazi Township, parents of young people who have fled to avoid military service are being arrested and detained at the Thazi police station. The authorities are forcing parents to sign guarantees for their children’s return and demanding money from them. Local residents report that parents are being held hostage to compel their children to return. The military council is conducting forced recruitment nationwide as they have not yet met their recruitment quota for the 11th military training batch scheduled to begin this month, according to reports from civilians across the country.
