The People’s Administration Team in Mindat Township, Chin State, has confirmed the discovery and seizure of over 2000 various types of landmines planted by the military council forces, with more remaining to be cleared. According to Ko Yo Man, the Information Officer of Mindat Township People’s Administration Team, the military council troops had planted various types of mines not only around their military outposts but also in civilian residential areas during their occupation of the town.
While more than 2000 mines have been successfully cleared, there are likely more remaining to be discovered and removed. The People’s Administration Team has issued a special warning to civilians returning to the town to exercise extreme caution. Residents are strongly advised not to touch or handle any suspicious objects, mines, or explosive devices they might find in their homes, buildings, or along roadsides. Instead, they should immediately report such discoveries to the relevant authorities. This precautionary measure is crucial for ensuring the safety of returning residents.
The liberation of Mindat began with Operation CB (Chin Brothers) on November 9th, culminating in the complete defeat of Infantry Battalion 274 on December 21st and securing full control of the town. However, the mines left behind by retreating military council forces continue to pose a significant threat to the lives and property of local residents. The extensive mining of civilian areas demonstrates the military council’s disregard for civilian safety, as these explosive devices remain a deadly legacy of their occupation even after their departure from the area.
