The People’s Administration Team in Mindat Township has confirmed the discovery and seizure of more than 2000 various types of landmines planted by the military council forces in Mindat city, Chin State, with more still requiring clearance. According to Ko Yo Man, the Information Officer of Mindat Township People’s Administration Team, the military council troops had extensively planted various types of mines not only around their military bases but also in civilian residential areas before their withdrawal.
While mine clearance teams have successfully removed over 2000 mines so far, authorities warn that more unexploded ordnance likely remains to be cleared, necessitating continued caution from residents. The People’s Administration Team has issued urgent appeals to returning civilians to exercise extreme caution and immediately report any suspicious objects or potential explosive devices they might encounter in their homes, buildings, or surrounding areas, rather than attempting to handle them personally. This warning comes as part of ongoing efforts to prevent civilian casualties from unexploded ordnance left behind by retreating military forces.
The liberation of Mindat city began with Operation CB (Chin Brothers) on November 9th, culminating in the complete capture of Infantry Battalion 274’s base on December 21st, marking full control over the city. However, the extensive mining of civilian areas by departing military council forces continues to pose serious risks to local residents’ lives and property. As a result, systematic mine clearance operations are ongoing, with special attention being paid to ensuring the safety and security of civilians who wish to return to their homes. The authorities emphasize that the cleanup process must be thorough and methodical to prevent any casualties from remaining explosive devices.
