The People’s Administration Team in Mindat Township has confirmed that more than 2000 various types of landmines planted by the military council forces have been seized, with more remaining to be cleared. According to Ko Yo Man, the Information Officer of Mindat Township People’s Administration Team, the military council troops had planted various types of mines not only around their military bases but also in civilian residential areas during their occupation of Mindat town.
While over 2000 various types of mines have already been cleared, authorities warn that civilians returning to the town must exercise extreme caution as there may still be more undiscovered mines. The People’s Administration Team has issued strict instructions for residents returning to the town to never touch or handle any suspicious objects or potential mines they might find in homes, buildings, or along roadsides. Instead, they are directed to immediately report such discoveries to relevant authorities.
The battle for Mindat began on November 9 as part of Operation CB (Chin Brothers), culminating in the complete capture of Infantry Battalion 274 on December 21 and subsequent full control of the town. However, as the military council forces retreated, they left behind numerous mines, necessitating ongoing demining operations before civilians can safely return to their homes. While demining teams are systematically searching and clearing throughout the town, authorities indicate that it will take considerable time to ensure all mines are cleared. The systematic placement of mines in civilian areas by retreating military forces demonstrates a deliberate strategy that continues to endanger civilian lives long after their departure from the area.
