The military council has forcibly demolished more than 80 houses along the Mandalay-Mattaya road in Kwa Ni Kan village, Patheingyi Township, Mandalay Region, using excavators and bulldozers under the pretext of road expansion. According to local sources, military troops numbering over 50 personnel systematically destroyed houses on both the eastern and western sides of the main road during a three-day operation from March 4 to March 6. The destruction was carried out without any prior notice to the residents, who had been living in these homes for many years.
According to a representative from MDY Revolution, the military council conducted the demolition operation without giving residents any opportunity to salvage their belongings, resulting in significant property losses. The operation was carried out with force, and residents were not allowed to remove their possessions before the destruction began. Furthermore, civilians who attempted to document the demolition by taking photographs were threatened and intimidated by armed Pyu Saw Htee members, who strictly prohibited any documentation of the destruction process.
The demolished homes belonged to families who had established their lives in the area over many years, with the sudden destruction disrupting their livelihoods and daily existence. Many households were left homeless and were denied the chance to retrieve their belongings before the demolition. Local residents point to this incident as another example of the military council’s systematic oppression of civilians, as the demolition was conducted without any consideration for the welfare of the affected families or their right to proper notification and relocation assistance. The destruction has caused significant hardship for the community, with many families losing both their homes and possessions in this forced eviction.
