The abbot of a monastery in Kyauk Kwin village, Hpapun Township, Karen State, has passed away following an unprovoked aerial bombardment by the military council forces. According to local residents, the Venerable Bhaddanta Wisudda was killed when military aircraft attacked the monastery on the evening of March 5th, despite there being no active fighting in the area. The attack included both aerial bombing and machine gun fire from military aircraft, targeting the religious compound without any military justification.
During the aerial assault, two other monks sustained severe injuries and were subsequently transported to Hpa-an for medical treatment. The monastery suffered extensive damage from the bombardment. Local sources confirmed that the funeral ceremonies for the deceased abbot were completed on March 6th. The condition of the two injured monks remains serious as they continue to receive medical care in Hpa-an. The attack has caused significant structural damage to the monastery buildings and surrounding religious structures.
This military council attack represents a deliberate targeting of religious infrastructure in an area where there was no active conflict, demonstrating the ongoing pattern of violence against civilian and religious targets. The incident has created widespread fear and security concerns among local residents, who view this as another example of the military council’s brutal tactics against civilian populations. The targeting of a Buddhist monastery, a protected religious site, has particularly alarmed the local community and highlighted the military council’s disregard for religious institutions and civilian safety. The attack continues a pattern of violence that has characterized the military council’s operations against its own people, causing displacement, death, and destruction in civilian areas.
