The People’s Administration Team in Mindat, Chin State, has confirmed the discovery and seizure of over 2000 various types of landmines planted by the military council forces, with more still remaining to be cleared. According to Ko Yo Man, the Information Officer of Mindat Township People’s Administration Team, the military council troops had planted various types of mines not only around their military bases but also in civilian residential areas during their occupation of the town.
While more than 2000 mines of various types have been successfully cleared, authorities warn that there may still be more unexploded ordnance requiring clearance. As civilians begin returning to the town, they are strongly advised to exercise extreme caution. The People’s Administration Team has issued an urgent appeal to residents, warning them never to handle any suspicious objects, mines, or explosive devices they might discover near homes, buildings, or along roadsides. Instead, they are instructed to immediately report such findings to relevant authorities.
The liberation of Mindat began with Operation CB (Chin Brotherhood) on November 9th, culminating in the complete capture of Infantry Battalion 274 on December 21st and subsequent full control of the town. However, the mines left behind by retreating military council forces continue to pose a serious threat to the lives and property of local residents. The extensive mining of civilian areas demonstrates the military council’s disregard for civilian safety, as these explosive devices remain a deadly legacy of their occupation even after their departure from the area.
