The Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs officially announced on March 8 that Canada has imposed additional sanctions on 13 individuals from Myanmar’s military council, including generals, ministers, and deputy ministers, along with three organizations. These sanctions come as a response to the military council’s continued oppression of Myanmar’s people and demonstrate increasing international pressure against the regime.
Local residents confirmed that Venerable Bhaddanta Wisuddha, the abbot of a monastery in Kyauk Kwin village in Hpapun Township, Karen State, passed away after the military council conducted an airstrike on the monastery despite there being no active fighting in the area. This action by the military council, which constantly claims to be protecting Buddhism, further exposes their false narratives. The incident highlights the military’s continued use of indiscriminate violence against civilian targets, including religious buildings and figures.
In Nyaung-U Township, Mandalay Region, two military council-appointed administrators, Htun Wai and Pyu Saw Htee Soe Lwin, were reportedly killed in an attack. This incident further demonstrates the collapse of the military council’s administrative mechanisms and indicates growing public resistance against the military dictatorship. The military council continues to lose territorial control while escalating its violent oppression against civilians, showing its weakening grip on power and increasing reliance on force to maintain control.
