
According to Data for Myanmar, from January 2022 to November 2024, violence in Sagaing Region resulted in 4,159 civilian deaths and 3,150 injuries. Among these casualties, Shwebo, Monywa, Sagaing, Kanbalu, Yinmabin, and Kale districts recorded significantly higher civilian deaths compared to other districts, with a total of 3,513 fatalities. The monthly average of civilian deaths in Sagaing Region stands at 118, while injuries average 90 per month due to violent incidents.
Seventy percent of total civilian deaths were caused by direct targeting of civilians through acts of violence, while 25 percent resulted from explosive weapons including long-range artillery attacks. The townships of Monywa, Sagaing, Shwebo, Kanbalu, Myinmu, Khin-U, Ye-U, Wetlet, Kale, and Chaung-U have witnessed notably high numbers of targeted civilian killings by armed groups. The types of attacks causing civilian casualties include airstrikes, drone attacks, artillery shelling, landmine explosions, military column operations, and targeted assassinations.
Of the total civilian deaths in Sagaing Region, 2,414 were attributed to the military council’s forces, while 1,027 were caused by revolutionary groups. An additional 625 deaths resulted from various circumstances including crossfire during battles, civilian-on-civilian violence, criminal gang activity, and incidents where the perpetrators could not be identified. These statistics demonstrate the severe humanitarian crisis in Sagaing Region, where civilians continue to bear the brunt of ongoing conflict and violence.
