MYANMAR – Political Prisoners Network Myanmar (PPNM) announced that there have been calls from families of political prisoners to make fraudulent requests for money for various reasons by the Employees of the Department of Prison of the Terrorist Junta Council.
Starting in January 2025, it was said that financial fraud by prison officials from the Mandalay Obo, Daik- U, Myeik, Nyaung U, Pakokku jails has become worse.
The Obo prison staff called the family members of the political prisoners and found that they have been collecting money until today. At Daik-U Prison, the warden asked the families of political prisoners for 100,000 kyats to 10 million kyats, claiming that they were hospitalized.
Last January, political prisoners in Obo Prison fraudulently demanded money from 50,000 to 100,000 kyats from their families, claiming that they had diarrhea.
An employee of Myeik Prison asked for money from family members, claiming that a political prisoner had asked for money. It was also said that it was asked for money in Nyaung U prison and called family members for money.
The employees of Pakokku prison were also asking for money from 100,000 to 300,000 kyats. As family members of political prisoners, the PPNM have also informed them to be careful before transferring money after thorough investigation.
