The Political Prisoners Network Myanmar (PPNM) has confirmed that nine political prisoners have died between January and April 2025 due to insufficient healthcare and medical treatment in prisons across Myanmar. These deaths occurred in various prisons including Daik-U, Thayawady, Myaungmya, Obo, and Katha prisons, primarily due to the lack of timely medical care and treatment for the inmates.
Among the deceased political prisoners were Ko Myo Min Oo and Ko Moe Kyaw from Daik-U Prison, Ko Thu Ra Aung from Thayawady Prison, Ko Kyaw Zin Latt from Myaungmya Prison, Daw San Yi, Ko Aung Htun, Ko Thiha, and U Lu Aung from Obo Prison, and Ko Hein Min Thu from Katha Prison. The Political Prisoners Network has reported that these deaths were directly attributed to the inadequate healthcare provisions and lack of necessary medical supplies within the prison system.
In 2023, a total of 34 political prisoners died in custody, with 18 of them being killed and 16 dying from health-related issues. The situation continued to deteriorate as 31 more political prisoners lost their lives in prisons across the country during 2024. Currently, human rights violations persist within the prison system, and prisoners continue to face severe challenges in accessing necessary healthcare services. The PPNM has emphasized that despite the mounting death toll, adequate medical care remains unavailable to prisoners, and numerous human rights violations continue to occur within the prison system.
