
The Monywa Public Strike Leading Committee and activist youth conducted activities in Monywa Township, Sagaing Region, to commemorate the 8888 Democracy Movement on August 8. The demonstrations took place near military council-controlled areas including Bodhi Tataung area, along the Monywa-Mandalay highway, and in front of Monywa’s city gate.
During these activities, young people wearing jerseys with the number eight participated in umbrella protests as part of a global movement, conducting demonstrations in both military council-controlled territories and revolutionary-controlled areas. This action was part of an international movement to showcase the Myanmar people’s struggle for democracy to the world.
The 8888 Democracy Movement remains a pivotal moment in Myanmar’s history and continues to be a major driving force in today’s Myanmar revolution. The youth of Monywa took risks to express their opposition to the military dictatorship and their support for democracy, demonstrating people power despite the military council’s threats and oppression. Their actions represent ongoing resistance against military rule and the continued fight for democratic rights in Myanmar.
