Local residents report that 6 civilians were killed and 7 others were injured when the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) opened fire after locals tried to stop illegal gold mining operations in Mong Si village tract, Kutkai Township in northern Shan State. The incident occurred around 1:35 PM on March 5 when local residents went to protest against gold mining activities near Pyein Chan village in the Mong Si village tract area of Kutkai Township.
According to local sources, villagers from multiple communities attempted to stop the gold mining operations along the Nam Leim stream due to concerns about contamination of drinking water, bathing water, and environmental damage that could affect agricultural activities. When the miners continued their operations despite initial protests, residents from Na Lay village, Man Bong village, Mong Si, Ban Yang Khar village, and Pin Chan village collectively went to demand the cessation of mining activities.
During the confrontation, MNDAA troops arrived at the scene and opened fire on the civilians, resulting in the deaths of two village leaders and four male civilians, while seven others sustained injuries. Local residents are demanding action against those responsible for this violent attack, and tensions continue to remain high in the area. The incident has highlighted ongoing conflicts between local communities and armed groups over resource extraction activities in the region.
