An earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale struck near Thazi town in Mandalay Region during the afternoon of May 9, causing alarm among residents in Meiktila, Yamèthin, Mandalay, and Wundwin cities. The earthquake occurred at 3:07 PM with its epicenter at a depth of 10 kilometers. The National Unity Government has issued warnings to the public to remain vigilant and follow earthquake safety guidelines, as aftershocks from the recent Sagaing earthquake may continue to occur.
According to a resident from Meiktila, the earthquake was accompanied by intense shaking and a loud booming sound. The tremor was particularly noticeable in Meiktila around 3:06 PM, and locals confirmed it was the strongest earthquake felt since the March 28 seismic event. The shaking was distinctly felt across most townships in Mandalay Region, including Mandalay, Wundwin, and Yamèthin.
The damage caused by the March 28 earthquake in Mandalay city remains unrepaired to this day. As a result, local residents are increasingly concerned about potential future seismic activities and are maintaining heightened vigilance. The National Unity Government is intensifying its earthquake disaster prevention and emergency response efforts. The recent earthquake has added to the anxiety of residents who are still recovering from the impact of previous seismic events, particularly in areas where structural damage from the March 28 earthquake remains visible.
