
The Inle Region Human Rights Group has confirmed that 46 people have died and more than 950 houses were destroyed in Kela Village and Zayatgyi Village of Nyaungshwe Township, Shan State, following a powerful earthquake that struck on March 28. In Kela Village, 41 people lost their lives and 818 houses were destroyed, while in Zayatgyi Village, 5 people died and 132 houses, one monastery, and one school were destroyed by the earthquake.
According to an official from the Inle Region Human Rights Group, they have only been able to confirm casualty figures from these two villages so far, and there may be more damage in other areas. The death toll could potentially rise further. Local residents are living in fear due to building collapses and landslides caused by the earthquake, and they are in urgent need of emergency assistance, according to local sources.
This earthquake represents the most destructive natural disaster to hit the Inle region in many years. Local residents are in desperate need of assistance for housing reconstruction, basic necessities, healthcare, and other essential requirements. Community members have emphasized that relevant organizations need to provide aid and support as quickly as possible to address the immediate humanitarian needs of those affected by this devastating earthquake.
