Thai authorities in Kanchanaburi Province have arrested 41 Myanmar nationals who illegally entered Thailand, including those planning to travel to Malaysia through unauthorized routes. Among those arrested were 33 men who intended to travel to Malaysia and 8 women who planned to work in Bangkok. The arrests highlight the ongoing challenges faced by Myanmar citizens seeking opportunities abroad.
The arrested individuals originated from various regions of Myanmar, including Yangon, Mawlamyine, and Hpakant. They had entered Thailand through the Three Pagodas Pass border crossing before proceeding along the Kanchanaburi route. Those planning to travel to Malaysia had paid brokers 55,000 Thai Baht each, while the women heading to Bangkok had paid approximately 15,000 Thai Baht per person for their arrangements.
Thai authorities conducted the operation on the evening of June 22, 2023, intercepting the vehicle carrying the migrants at Wat Yu Long monastery in Village No. 4 of the Tha Khanun village group. The 41 Myanmar nationals and their driver were transferred to the Thong Pha Phum police station for legal proceedings. This incident reflects the situation of Myanmar people attempting to leave their country due to current political and economic difficulties, seeking opportunities abroad through irregular migration channels despite the significant risks and costs involved.
