Myanmar ethnic groups in the UK gathered in front of the Parliament building and Prime Minister’s residence in London to commemorate the 37th anniversary of the 8888 Uprising on August 8. During the protest, participants paid tribute to all the martyrs who sacrificed their lives fighting against successive dictatorships. Representatives from various ethnic organizations based in the UK attended and delivered speeches at the event.
The protesters demanded an immediate end to the military council’s violence, including airstrikes against innocent civilians and children. They called for the release of all political prisoners, including State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi and President Win Myint. The demonstrators also urged international governments and people to take action against Myanmar’s military council. A petition was submitted to the UK Prime Minister’s office with these demands.
Participants at the protest chanted slogans calling for the restoration of democracy in Myanmar, the complete end of military dictatorship, and the establishment of a federal democratic union. They demanded justice for civilians killed by the military council’s violence, political prisoners suffering from torture, and people forced to flee their homes. The protesters emphasized the importance of international pressure to stop the military council’s ongoing human rights violations and to support Myanmar’s return to democratic rule.
