The National Unity Government (NUG) has reported that an earthquake measuring 3.7 on the Richter scale struck near Zarapkwin area in Hlegu Township, Yangon Region, at 10:55 PM on May 6. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers below the surface. Earlier that evening, at 9:40 PM, a smaller earthquake measuring 2.9 on the Richter scale was also recorded in the same area.
According to the NUG’s statement, while earthquakes measuring above 4.0 on the Richter scale typically cause property damage, they decided to issue this announcement about these smaller tremors due to heightened public concern following the recent devastating Sagaing earthquake. The people of Yangon are particularly anxious following the March 28 earthquake in Sagaing that resulted in nearly 4,000 deaths.
A resident from Min Road in Sanchaung Township, Yangon, described their experience during the earthquake, stating that while the tremor wasn’t severe, it was distinctly noticeable, particularly in high-rise buildings. Another resident from Myochit Road in Insein Township expressed concerns about earthquake risks in Yangon, citing the high concentration of tall buildings and the prevalence of structures built without proper construction standards. The public’s anxiety is particularly heightened due to Yangon’s urban landscape and building safety concerns.
