A military airstrike on an internally displaced persons (IDP) camp in Sadaung Township, Mandalay Region, has resulted in the death of two civilians and left nine others injured, including a Buddhist monk and four children, according to a spokesperson from the Pyin Oo Lwin District People’s Defense Force. The attack occurred at approximately 9:48 AM on May 15, when a military jet fighter targeted the IDP camp located between the villages of 9 Mile and Lan Lay Kyut in Sadaung Township.
The airstrike claimed the lives of a 60-year-old man and a woman who died instantly at the scene. Among the nine people who sustained injuries were four children and a Buddhist monk, highlighting the indiscriminate nature of the attack on civilian targets. Local sources emphasized that deliberately targeting an IDP camp constitutes a war crime, as these facilities house civilians who have already been displaced by conflict. The continued targeting of IDP camps has resulted in an increasing number of civilian casualties and deaths.
Officials from the Pyin Oo Lwin District People’s Defense Force have advised local residents to stay in secure locations away from military council forces and to construct bomb shelters as protection against aerial attacks. They have also called for international intervention to address the military council’s war crimes. There is currently an urgent need for security measures, basic necessities, and healthcare support for the displaced populations in the region. The attack represents another instance of the military council’s ongoing campaign of violence against civilian populations, particularly targeting those who have already been forced to flee their homes due to military operations.
