A 19-year-old student was killed after being hit in the head by artillery fire from the military council forces in the eastern part of Pekon Township, located on the border of Karenni State and Shan State, according to an official from the Pekon Township People’s Security Force. The incident occurred on June 6 when the military council troops fired heavy weapons into villages without any ongoing battles in the area. The artillery shells landed and exploded in one of the villages, striking the student who was studying inside his home at the time of the incident.
Local residents reported that the deceased student was academically gifted and known for being a dutiful son to his parents. His mother, who suffers from a heart condition, is currently being supported by others as she struggles to cope with the devastating loss of her son. The artillery attack also resulted in injuries to other civilians in the area, according to local sources. The military council’s indiscriminate shelling of civilian areas has become a recurring threat to the local population.
The military council forces have been regularly conducting artillery strikes in Pekon Township and carrying out aerial surveillance using military helicopters. Due to these deliberate attacks on civilians, the People’s Security Force has warned residents to dig bomb shelters and remain vigilant. The brutal attacks by military council forces have severely disrupted the daily lives of local residents, forcing them to live in constant fear and anxiety. The ongoing military operations have created a humanitarian crisis in the region, with civilians bearing the brunt of the violence perpetrated by the military council forces.
