Eleven Mon revolutionary groups have jointly called for political parties to refrain from participating in the sham election being prepared by the terrorist military council in Yangon. According to Nai Peter, spokesperson for the New Rehmonnya Federated Force (NRFF), this demand stems from the fact that the military group’s mock election is not only illegitimate but also completely contradicts the will of the people.
The Mon Unity Party, which participated in the 2020 general election, has been collaborating with the military group since the coup. Although they claim to be engaging with the military group for the security of Mon people, they have been unable to prevent the military group’s atrocities in Mon regions. The spokesperson pointed out that the ashes remaining in Dhamma Village after the military group’s arson attacks stand as evidence of this failure. The military council is currently preparing to hold a sham election under the pretext of serving Mon national interests, but the Mon people will not accept this. The revolutionary groups urge against participation in the fake election out of respect for the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for national equality and self-determination, and in solidarity with the Mon people who continue to suffer under military oppression.
The military group has violated the 2008 Constitution by seizing power and extending the state of emergency multiple times. Due to the people’s armed resistance, they have lost control of numerous territories and completely lack public support, making their election illegitimate, as highlighted by Mon revolutionary organizations. The military council has failed to implement ASEAN’s Five-Point Consensus and lacks recognition from ASEAN, the UN, and international organizations. ASEAN has officially stated that the election is not a priority, and democratic nations have condemned the military group’s election plans. Therefore, the Mon revolutionary groups urge political parties not to turn their backs on the people by participating in the military’s schemes, and instead to transition to the people’s side as quickly as possible.
