Local residents and rescue workers have reported that 11 civilians have lost their lives due to flash floods and landslides in Thandaunggyi Township, Karen State. The natural disasters began in late July following heavy rainfall in the region. According to rescue workers, there is an urgent need for emergency assistance, medical supplies, and donations for those affected by the disasters.
The victims who lost their lives in the landslides were residents living in temporary shelters on plantation lands in Thandaunggyi Township. Local sources indicate that the casualties occurred when sudden flash floods and landslides struck following intense rainfall. Currently, rescue workers are conducting clearance operations of roads and landslide areas using only manual labor, which has significantly slowed down the recovery efforts due to the lack of heavy machinery.
A local humanitarian worker has disclosed that the rescue operations are progressing slowly due to the absence of heavy equipment, forcing workers to rely solely on manual labor. There is an urgent need for clothing, medicine, and dry rations for families who have lost their homes in the disaster. The worker also noted that infrastructure rehabilitation, particularly road repairs, requires more than just humanitarian group efforts and will need considerable time to complete. The situation has created significant challenges for both rescue workers and affected residents in accessing and delivering necessary aid to the impacted areas.
