MYANMAR- The National Unity Government (NU) urges the international community not to give legitimacy to the Junta and its affiliates as the coup leader Min Aung Hlaing is about to face trial as a defendant in the ICC.
Mr. Kyaw Zaw, spokesperson of the National Unity Government’s Presidential Office, made the aforementioned statement in today’s Press briefing program (December 24).
“As the coup leader is closer to being a criminal defendant in the International Tribunal, I called for the international community not to give them the legitimacy they so long for. We welcome neighboring and ASEAN countries’ efforts to find a possible solution to Myanmar’s crisis. I would express thanks to Singapore’s foreign minister and three former British ministers for demanding the release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi,” said the spokesperson of the NUG Presidential Office.
“I am concerned that only the representatives of the Terrorist War Council were invited to the meeting between Myanmar’s neighboring countries in Thailand on December 19. This meeting will not solve the problem and may encourage the violence of the Terrorist War Council,” he continued.
“It is questionable whether “Myanmar-owned, Myanmar-led” means talking only to the terrorist military council. When trying to resolve the Myanmar issue, there is a need for broad consultation with all different stakeholders and wisely avoiding actions that will destroy the trust of all stakeholders,” he expressed his opinion regarding the recent meeting in Thailand.
“These efforts should be in line with the wishes and interests of our (Burmese) people. Otherwise, the process will be manipulated by the military regimes for their own benefit as they always do, and will not yield tangible results at the end. Efforts of neighboring countries may be wasted,” said the NUG presidential office spokesperson, Mr. Kyaw Zaw.
