RAKHINE STATE – The Arakan Army (AA) and revolutionary forces captured the junta council’s Taungponegyi Camp at the border of Rakhine State and Bago Division and the junta soldiers that died during that battle were being cremated at Ayenyeinyar Cemetery in Pyay, reported the local military news source.
AA and revolutionary forces launched their offensive on Taungponegyi Camp on the Tongup-Padaung Road on January 1 and successfully captured it on January 7 evening.
“Mikekakho Camp, also known as Taungponegyi Camp, at the border of Padaung Township has fallen. It happened yesterday evening (January 7). We can say that AA forces have arrived at the border of Bago Division,” said the military news source.
The captured Taungponegyi Camp is located near Pyay on the Tongup-Padaung Road along the Bago Yoma range. As there are many weapon manufacturing factories of the junta defense industry around Pyay and Padaung, it is expected the fighting could intensify further if the AA forces were the advance. Currently, the surviving junta soldiers from Taungponegyi Camp were known to have retreated to Moehti Camp.
“The (junta) forces from Taungponegyi retreated to Moehti. There are more soldiers stationed at Moehti. It is the camp at the last border of Padaung. One you passes Moehti, you are in Rakhine. It is estimated that there are around 700 junta forces at Moehti. Now, junta forces from Division 66 in Inma are being sent as reinforcement to Moehti,” continued the military news source.
It is said that the junta council suffered heavy losses during the battle at Taungponegyi and the dead bodies are continuously being sent to Pyay.
On the other hand, the Arakan Army has yet to release any statement regarding the capture of Taungponegyi Camp.
