YANGON DIVISION – In Dagon Myothit (East) Township, Tun Aung, the administration officer for Ward No. 9 shut off the Ngamoeyeik water pipelines and forcibly asked the households to pay 170,000 Kyats per house, saying it is to fix the pipes, reported the local residents.
On December 1, 2024, Tun Aung shut off the original water pipes of the domestic and commercial users in Ward No. 9 then set up new pipes and is now forcibly demanding money from the residents to cover the costs.
It is said that Tun Aung asked for 170,000 Kyats per household: 60,000 for water meter, 30,000 for the meter case, 5,000 for sealants/tapes, 35,000 for pipe connector, 15,000 for the main door, 20,000 for black pipe, and 5,000 for labour costs.
In addition, the ward administration officer reportedly threatened to cut off the water supply of the households that did not pay, only forcibly demanding payment.
“Ward Administration Officer Tun Aung of Ward No. 9, Dagon Myothit (East) is forcibly collecting money, saying that the current Ngamoeyeik pipes will be replaced and said that we will continue to get the water supply only if we pay and that the supply will be cut off if we do not pay,” explained the residents.
In Yangon, the Municipal Department and the ward administration teams frequently switch off Joephyu and municipal pipelines to forcibly collect money from residents. No action is taken if the people submit complaints and the Municipal Department and the administration teams would demand money from the people, using the water pipes as an excuse.
