MYANMAR-On International Day of Persons with Disabilities, international organizations announced that people with disabilities are facing huge challenges amidst the ongoing conflicts in Myanmar.
An estimated 5.9 million people with disabilities in Myanmar face enormous challenges, especially amid the ongoing conflict and displacement, announced the U.S. Embassy in Myanmar.
USAID/Burma partners with local organizations in creating accessible learning environments to learn and realize their dreams regardless of their ability level and providing vocational training.
United Nations Myanmar also mentioned that people with disabilities are at more risk of abuse and violence since they seem vulnerable and easy targets.
People with disabilities are often dependent on their caregivers, and there may be abusers/assailants among those caregivers.
Services available to victims of gender-based violence are often out of reach for them and disabled people are looked down upon and discriminated which is why they find it difficult to get help.
In order to respond to such situations, it is necessary to make services more accessible to them and provide specific services to their needs, mentioned the United Nations Myanmar.
